Emotional Eating Health Coaching

When we place food at the center of our lives consistently and chronically it’s time to take a step back and reassess how it’s working for us.

Developing a healthier relationship with food starts with developing a healthier relationship with our emotions.

What does emotional eating look like?

Emotional eating means using food:

  • for a purpose other than nourishment or satiation
  • as a coping mechanism for emotions that you don’t want to feel
  • to feel better, self-soothe, numb, fill a void
  • or, to feel some sense of control.

Possible signs of emotional eating include:

  • eating alone, eating in secret and/or hiding packaging
  • eating foods that you wouldn’t eat around others
  • feelings of sadness, anxiety, guilt, shame, worry, or powerlessness
  • digestion issues, difficulty in sleeping, and weight fluctuation

We often eat in response to positive emotions (celebration), not only negative. When we eat simply because food tastes good, without guilt or feeling of being totally out of control, this is completely normal.

Only when we use food as a primary way of coping, consistently and chronically, does it move away from a health realm. If it affects our life in a harmful way it’s time to reassess.
