When the Body Speaks: A Journey into Femininity and Inner Wisdom
“You are much more than the sum of all your changes. Your body, as it is now, is a sacred map—a guide that leads you back to yourself. These shifts, this recalibration, you feel are not here to unsettle you; they are here to awaken you”, a gentle, yet powerful words of my inner voice addressed me as I sat down in meditation intending to unravel my most profound learnings for this year.
I knew that the transformative changes in my system—physical, emotional, and spiritual—would be inevitable. But what if these changes were not an unsettling cacophony but an orchestrated music? What if they are the symphony of my body, spirit, and sacred femininity, inviting me to listen more attentively, more deeply?
I reflect upon the experience I had fifteen years ago. What began as a whisper from my body grew louder and louder until it turned into a loud voice and then into a scream for help. I later realised that for more than a year before that warning, I had stopped supporting the call of my soul and my life mission, so my life stopped supporting me in return as my joints (the “support” of the physical system) flamed up into acute rheumatoid arthritis. I became aware that I had ignored my body’s initial whispers and disregarded the voices that grew louder and louder. Eventually, that painful scream succeeded in waking me up and forcing me to attend to myself—lovingly and systematically, without any medication, but through deep inner exploration.
Now, fifteen years later, I find myself amidst a whirlwind of both external and internal changes, all accompanied by the presence of mid-age hormonal shifts. Nights of waking up drenched in sweat are no longer surprising, nor are sudden, unpredictable waves of emotions and a rhythm that no longer follows a familiar pattern. But instead of resisting, my 2025 self advises me to lean in and ask my body: “What are you trying to tell me?” What I have learned has changed everything…
The Body Speaks
Our bodies are miraculous storytellers. Every sensation, every ache, every flutter carries a message. Modern scientific disciplines, such as somatic psychology and psychophysiology, reveal the profound interconnectedness of the body and mind.
The concept of ‘interoception’—our ability to perceive internal bodily sensations—reminds us that the body is constantly communicating (just like everything in nature, right?). In his scientific work, Antonio Damasio shows how somatic markers, or bodily sensations derived from emotions, enable quicker and more intuitive decision-making. Understanding these subconscious signals is crucial for bodily awareness and self-care.
How many times have I forced myself to agree to something even though a “lump in my throat” signalled discomfort, only to later find myself in a situation that proved distressing or harmful? The tension in my shoulders, a sign of unspoken burdens and stress, or the pain in my chest as unexpressed grief—these are just a few of the messages our system conveys. The connection between the brain and gut, often referred to as our “second brain,” validates what ancient wisdom has long known—the body is a treasury of intuition and wisdom, often knowing the truth before the mind does.
But how do we tune into this wisdom? Practices like body scanning, Yoga Nidra, and somatic movement therapy can help us pause and listen. These practices teach us to decipher the body’s language.
Reclaiming the Sacred Feminine
Femininity has long been misunderstood, overlooked, and neglected in a world that celebrates external achievements and linear progress. True femininity is cyclical, intuitive, and deeply rooted in our connection to life. It does not exclude the presence of masculine polarity or principles, but balances with them.

In spiritual traditions, the feminine principle is often depicted as the force of creation, intuition, and nurturing. For instance, in Hindu tradition, Shakti embodies dynamic energy and creative power, while Taoism speaks of Yin as the gentle yet powerful force of nature. These principles remind us that femininity is not a weakness but a profound strength—a strength that nurtures, transforms, and creates.
However, when energetically imbalanced with the masculine principle, the feminine may veer towards extremes—either aggressive self-sufficiency and heightened testosterone, or lethargy, excessive emotionality, victimhood, and other traits. Balance is key and manifests as calmness, ease, surrender, and wisdom.
Reflecting on the principles of balanced femininity and recognising the importance of cycles, I begin to view even perimenopause not as an end but as a transition—a sacred call to recalibrate, align and connect with deeper truths within myself.
Embodying Commitments, Returning to Self
As my conversation with my inner self draws near, I already feel how these insights and reminders are beautifully shaping my life.
Additional support in listening to my body’s whispers (and not waiting for it to scream) manifests through several commitments, such as regular movement, whether through yoga, the gym, dance, or nature walks. I also remind myself that healthy food, prepared with care and consumed with mindfulness, is not just nutrition but an act of love for my body. And then, of course, there is the importance of quality sleep, which allows my body to recover and align with its internal rhythms.
A deep connection with myself overflows into my social and professional life, which becomes a mirror of this nurturing energy, spaces for mutual growth, care, and respect. I witness how this approach enhances my creativity, focus, and ability to connect meaningfully with others through the small and great joys of everyday life, travel, learning, and the privilege of being alive.
The feeling of inadequacy and a constant sense of “something more” that would make me whole is replaced by the awareness that I am enough and complete exactly as I am, even as growth and deepening remain integral to the journey.
In short, by listening to the wisdom of my body and the sacred rhythms of my femininity, I discover that everything I need has always been within me.
